Block that Met-aphor
Cher public, you all know that La Cieca just adores Beverly Sills, and your scribe simply dotes on the Met’s new web presence. But, entre nous, given the new quizmistress’s recent viduity, is this caption really in the very best of taste?
Especially when, in the photo, she looks just a little like she could be crying, not laughing.
Having been raised in a language where “post-mortem” still means what it did in Latin, I eschew the expression at all times, in any language. Viduity or no viduity (brava for the 10-dollar word), to “enjoy” a post-mortem is probably an awkward turn of phrase in any context.
Post-dated “brava” to La Cieca is the caption is suddenly changed.
I have to go to a tedious Xmas get-together ce soir and will not be able to enjoy the wit and bon-motery of tonight’s cybersalon. Have fun, fanciulle, and let’s hope it’s a serviceable, maybe even enjoyable, score.
