Bright shining as The Sun
People who love Aprile Millo really love Ms. Millo, and so interspersed among the nearly capacity crowd dressed in their finery as the National Italian American Foundation honored the soprano were the occasional young man or pair of young men tastefully outfitted in smart jeans and strategically placed around the hall for maximum claque impact. Whenever their girl appeared, there were noticeable exclamations of pure joy.
. . . .
As for Ms. Millo, she dismissed the printed program as irrelevant and offered an entirely different couple of selections . . . . But the undoubted takeaway memory was her knockout version of the "Suicidio" from the Orfano Canal act of Amilcare Ponchielli's "La Gioconda," which she is currently singing at the Met. This is properly classified as a dramatic soliloquy, and never have I heard it sung quite this dramatically. Ms. Millo, in addition to possessing all of the requisite vocal tools, has a highly developed sense of acting. Her little pauses and flashes of the eyes were mesmerizing. This was one of those rare performances at which I heard a loud exhalation of breath at its conclusion, and realized it was mine.
Those flashing eyes (not to mention the vocal tools) may be witnessed at Millo's first Tosca of the season on November 25 at the Met.

ooo i can't wait to see her as tosca on saturday!!!
As a Millo newbie, one can't but admire Aprile's enduring artistry, I wrote something in blog on her extraordinary 1989 Met Aida on DVD. This particular performance is so earth-shattering and downright legendary, she makes most of today's dramatic sopranos seem anemic by comparison. Get this DVD!
Speaking of blogs, here's another shout-out: Please visit my new blog-in-progress. I'm humbled and ecstatic to report that after only 5 days online, I already have over 200 clicks, so enormous thanks to those who visited and left messages.
i think millo has a great sense of acting through music...the concert perfromance of "la mamma morta" posted on youtube is sensational...you can see her standing at the piano in a rather anonymous blue dress but the way she moves and sing is simply mesmerizing....not to mention the wonderful accompanist who really is feeling what millo feels...
...i was forgetting: has anybody noticed millo's resemblance to bette midler??? ;-))
p.s.
La Cieca...i luv ya...i'm yours!:-D
I'm not exactly sure if this has been posted already but it's worth a look as it is very interesting.

It's a fascinating article on the Aprile.
Well, I love Millo, but after singing a GREAT 1.5 acts, she has just had a major crash on the final "sig-noi-oh-oir" in "Vissi d'arte." Oddly, this is the SAME place (and the only place) where she went way off pitch when I saw her in the role in Chicago.
This phrase seems to be a disaster for her--how come?
I heard Millo's Tosca on Saturday night. Vissi d'arte was a disaster. What the hell happened. I fully expected her to be replaced in Act III, but she soldiered on...the trooper. Im looking forward to Tuesday's night performance. Tell me guys, do you know what happened with that note?
I think she has a mental, not vocal prblem here. It happens nearly every time she sings the role. Tuesday was much, much better. i went back and checked my in-house from 1998 - and she pretty much nailed it then, but you could hear her struggling a little. Anyway - i was surprised the note that Millo sounds pretty much the same as in 1998. Plus - one note does not a performance make. She's such an artist - I think w=she really lives through the music. i know many think her old-fashioned acting style is hammy and camp - but I find it very, very sincere and toughing. I'm convinced it's all from the heart. Just listening - I get way more drama from her than from divas more celbrated for their thespian skills.
Please frogive the typos - I just (thought) I woke up!
