La nuit des cinq étoiles
As if the season were not glamorous enough, it's already time for "The Second Annual F. Paul Driscoll Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence," or, as some insist on calling the prize, "The Opera News Awards." (No zing, no zazz, no punch...) Anyway, the lucky honorees this year are "Wagnerian tenor Ben Heppner, longtime Metropolitan Opera music director James Levine, bass René Pape, retired soprano and currently active director Renata Scotto, and dramatic soprano Deborah Voigt." The handing out of statuettes will take place in the ballroom of the Hotel Pierre in New York City on Sunday, January 28, 2007. (via Playbill Arts)

At least it's not as bad as this year's "Kennedy Center Honors" which include Spielberg and Dolly Parton!
what do you mean "At least?" Would you really begrudge any of these people that award? These are all well-loved established Artists, why shouldn't they be recognized, especially Scotto?
and what exactly is wrong with Dolly Parton Bill?
Renata Scotto - yes. Does anyone know anything about Voight as Salomé in Chicago?
Nothing is wrong about Dolly Parton -- but there are far more worthy and deserving artists ... the point being that the Kennedy Center Honors which used to honor people like Balanchine, Astaire, and Rodgers is now being reduced to a popularity contest.
Word from Chicago is that the rehearsals for Salome are going splendidly.
