Endless Love?
The Artists Formerly Known As The Love Couple made one of their now-rare duo appearances last weekend singing something called "Come Prima" at a BBC concert in London's Hyde Park. The poster for the event suggests that Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna are shall we say, growing apart.

So, just how simpatico were Gheorghiu and Banica onstage? Well, let's put it this way: the Beeb's website captioned this photo "Angela Gheorghiu duets with Roberto Alagna."
If you care to hear how this concert sounded, you can access it at BBC Radio 2. La Cieca's correspondent on the scene in Hyde Park suggests, "Use the 5 min skip button to miss the less interesting items. Angela's first contribution is 10 minutes in. Roberto's, followed by their duet, is about 50 minutes in, and the rest 1 hour 15 mins." Though, be warned, you'll miss "Italian sensation Vittorio Grigolo, plus trumpet player Alison Balsom and special guest, music legend Lionel Richie."
Why the distance between the once-inseparable team? Don't go blaming Sir Terry Wogan! But could it have something to do with the unbilled appearance of "hunky Romanian pop singer/actor" Stefan Banica Jr.?

Alas, the afternoon portion of the concert was not broadcast, so you'll just have to use your mind's ear to imagine the performances of "Madness tribute band One Step Behind, irrepressible cockney duo Chas & Dave, and poptastic singer Chico."

Yet, the recent webcast of Lalo's "Fiesque" from Montpellier starring The Love Couple was very interesting, a worthwhile endeavor.
It takes a lot of time and effort to memorize and perform a totally unknown opera that you probably won't ever perform again, so we do have to give them some points for being dedicated to the cause of real opera in real venues.
They could just jetset around the world doing these kinds of lucrative concerts or "La Boheme" (if he transposes downward a lot), but to do "Fiesque" is another matter. I even like the idea of their doing "La Rondine" in a lot of places...including the Met and(maybe) Houston and San Francisco.
About a year ago, when they were appearing together in PAGLIACCI, I ran into the two of them in Ameoba music (the Accadamey Music of the west Side). They were pretty lovey dovey...holding hands and everything. I only said about three words...they considered my purchase of La Rondine a "good choice."
Should you be so inclined, there is a music video of AG and Banica on youtube:

Montsie and Freddie they ain't. Alas, yet again, things were better in the old days. Even with crossover dreck.
Rysanekfreak -- Any chance of finding that webcast now? Sounds interesting.
What ?? But Angela Gheorghiu cancelled Fiesque ! She was replaced by Michelle Cannicioni. She wasn't ill, she just didn't want to sing this opera !
Roberto Alagna and her were supposed to sing la Rondine in Paris last year but the tenor cancelled quite a long time before and Angela Gheorghiu cancelled every performance, even though she kind of showed up at the rehearsals. Inva Mula and Giuseppe Filianoti were actually great.
Didn't Inva Mula sing Lisette the Maid on the Rondide recording?
If you really are a Rondine freak, you should know that Berkshire has all unannounced the ONLY definitive version of Puccini's final version (I hired Billy Budd to get me the score don't ask from whence, but he HAD met Mr. John Claggart BEFORE he killed him) -- it includes ALL the music and the essentially new third act, with the small amount of orchestration and some minor transitional music composed by Perretti (a living composer). It has Miriciou and Cura and is from 94; it is wonderfully conducted and has a first rate Prunier.
Googoo and Lasagna were supposed to record THIS version, and everyone else had learned it; they showed up having never looked at a score, so all that could be cone was the usual version with Parigi added for Roberto.
doesn't it look like she has gotten a breast augmentation in that last photo?
Damn! I have put this off for the past 3 times I've checked the blog, but I've finally got to say it: Since when do augmentations sag?
Does anyone actually prefer the revised version of RONDINE? I know I don't, mainly because I hate the re-written ending.
Sadly, while both Goo-goo and Lasagna (Like these handles) are good singers, they rarely deliver the thrills on stage in a consistant enough manner to make up for all their antics off-stage. (Her Violetta was quite wonderful and I like his French opera -Faust, Romeo, and Werther)It seems like they are always pulling some nonsense off-stage, it would be nice if they devoted the same energy to being just a little more artistic, and in his case picking his roles a little more carefully. I must admit, now that we have Villizon and Florez on the scene, it is almost a case of who needs Alagna anymore.
Tuano, are you telling me that wasn't Angela??!! The written info provided by the station had her name in the cast list. The announcer was speaking German or Czech or Latvian, and there was one point when it sounded as if he had said a different name, not hers, but I thought maybe it was just the way they would have pronounced it in that language.
Now I feel like a fool. Are you also going to say that wasn't even Lalo's "Fiesque," but it was "Fledermaus" I was listening to?
Anyway, I'm happy that Roberto is singing operas like "Cyrano" and "Fiesque" instead of the same tenor roles we always get in standard rotation.
And I'm really hoping that she and Renee get into a real catfight someday during some Met Gala...perhaps over who gets the best dressing room and who gets the best aria.
Just like Krystal and Alexis in the lily pond. I'd put my money on La G.
Opera Australia are shortly doing a concert version (only) of La Rondine. They've never done it before and I can't help but wonder why the concert version?? Has anyone got any theories? Would love to know why so.
"They were pretty lovey dovey...holding hands and everything."
Well, I hope not EVERYthing. These two are known to get very erm...friendly with eachother backstage.
