In other words, if you don’t like Renee, you must be a terrorist or something.

    Cieca-Grazie

I would be curious to know how many of the Netrebko bashers in this forum have heard her live.

Yes, she sang the queen in the competition that halted her into vocal stardom. From what I remember reading of her, she sang the Queen as well as Sonnombula, both of which are no longer in her repetoire? Hopefully!!! I question b/c I am unsure about the Sonnombula. By the way, the comment about the Son vergin verzzosa made me laugh out loud. That was hysterical. Paceonia– you and I are on the same page. =) You are hysterical.

I’ve heard Anna live several times. Hence my disappointment.
And, heck, if you’re doing a survey, I’d be curious to know how many Fleming bashers have heard her live.

    Renee Fleming
    Thais
    Manon
    Ellen (Peter Grimes)
    Recital (3 times)
    Concert Several Times
    Susanna (Floyd Sp?)
I love her but her mannerisms sometimes drive me crazy

I have… Fleming did well with the Strauss 4 last songs back a few years ago on a 9/11 tribute here, though a bit overpowered by the orchestra, and her recital last season recently left much to be desired IMO (save the Berg songs which suited her current mannerisms). Fleming is past it. Period. Gone are the 90′s…

Pacenoia – I wouldn’t plan on seeing anyone who couldn’t do coloratura sing Elvira in I Puritani. Guess that means Netrebko… Even the baritone role requires some… I’m currently singing the aria from there. Great stuff. I love Bellini too much to hear it butchered.

  • la divina due says:

I agree with baryton francais, Puritani is for coloraturas. If you have none, stay the hell away.

What I’ve observed is a lot of the Russian sopranos that I’ve heard, whether it be Gorchakova, Guleghina(oops, she’s Ukranian?), seems to have the vocal heft it takes, but my god, where are the reserves? It goes to show you they’ve gone for singing on their principal, and not on their interest….Netrebko is beautiful, she looks the fashion plate, but what good is that beauty if it can’t radiate to the voice in 2 decades time? This era seems to eat singers rather than nurture. Hearing Sutherland sing a high E flat 25 yrs after her knockout debut in Lucia, and 60 something….? who will be the survivor of the media era to wow us even 5 yrs from now? It’s not going to be one of these media babes, but most likely somebody the likes of Christina Goerke, Hasmik Papian, Christine Brewer, somebody without the looks but with rock solid technique, who knows themselves and the repertoire which makes them shine, not that of the klieg lights.
