Unnatural Acts of Introduction
A Very Special Guest Diva introduces La Cieca's latest podcast, Verdi's Aida as performed at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden on 12 April 1973. And the performance is pretty special, too: Gilda Cruz-Romo as Aida, Carlo Bergonzi as Radames, Mignon Dunn as Amneris, Gian Piero Mastromei as Amonasro . . . and Kiri te Kanawa as the Sacerdotessa! Sir Charles Mackerras conducts. Unnatural Acts of Opera.

Splendidissimo! I saw this series of performances and in the same opulent overdressed production as the recent Bumbry video clip. I can't say Mignon Dunn was very memorable (her sole CG appearances) for which I will probably be slated from your side of the pond. Mastromei went on to give the worst most coarsely sung Rigoletto I have ever heard.
A "nobilitá" -- yes, indeed! Margaret Juntwait, in your dreams.
La Cieca, do I see an Inside the Divas Studio series in your future?
Researching this performance on one of my favorite sites, www.esdf-opera.de, a database of nearly every recorded performance in 19th-century Italian opera, (It's in German), I noticed there's a recording of a performance with Jessye Normann and Fiorenza Cossotto. That's one duet I have GOT to hear.
Just the mention of Cossotto's name gives me goose bumps :)
Gilda Cruz-Romo my first Leonora and Aida. Wonderful - I have the Forzas on CD. She is almost forgotten now - just considered a Met house soprano. Overshadowed by Caballe on the international scene.
The Luisa Miller with Pavarotti from RAI is superb. She reaches almost Burzio like intensity on occasions (as in the Norma from Puerto Rico - no higher praise in my book.
She got very good reviews for her CG performances.
baritenor ... that aida with cossotto and norman is available on amazon:

have only heard it in excerpts (as there used to be an excerpts cd of it on gala) and its not a bad performance, albeit not a great one either i find. worth checking out though....
thanks!
thanks!
Reading winpal's comment reminded me of this question: Am I the only one who finds James Lipton of "Inside the Actors Studio" TOTALLY INSUFFERABLE?? Every time he starts his fawning, name-dropping pretentiousness, I have to turn it OFF!
I'm sure LaCieca would be a much more interesting host-ette.

Aida: Cheryl Studer
Amneris: Luciana D'Intino
Priestess: Yvonne Barclay
Radamès: Dennis O'Neill

Amonasro: Alexandru Agache
Ramphis: Robert Lloyd
The King of Egypt: Mark Beesley
Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden

What does the Alimo have to do with Cheryl Studer?
Studer represents the Texans, while D'Intino, who isn't extraordinary, easily is the victor in that battle.
This is a far more interesting version. Thanks to Charlie for posting this.

Actfive, I completely agree with you about James Lipton. He's absolutely the biggest suck-up I've ever seen. It's revolting watching him crawl all over these actors egos. It actually makes them look worse.
That show has got to be out of steam by now. I mean how many actors are worth that kind of attention. I expect pretty soon we'll see the likes of Pauly Shore.
Lipton could not have been any more fawning and name dropping than Dick Cavett in his prime. And while on media people to hate, does anyone remember William Pierce, who announced for the Boston symphony and Pops--worst pretentious snotty elitist voice of anyone ever on radio. Maybe he was very charming in person, but His Voice..!
