La Cieca has just completed the pilot for her very own (online) video series, playing Veejay in her own idiosyncratic way. Admittedly she is no Caskader, but she thinks you will agree that her presenting style is very animated. As always, La Cieca craves your comments and suggestions.
Many years ago, she was very very upset that her then boyfriend (Peter Finch) would kiss a man in the movie “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. She said so very strongly on T.V and in interviews–HOW COULD HE? do such a vile thing when he had HER!! She was reminded that it was just a role. To which she replied that the very idea of two men getting it on was abhorant to her! (The man in the movie was very cute! perhaps THAT was the problem)
Shirley homophobic? callasorphan, not to my experience oh sweet one! When she invited me and a few “more obvious girls” up to her room after a show for cocktails some years ago there was certainly no sign of any homophobia then. Are you sure she wasn’t being a bit flippant in the interview as a joke? – that does sound more like it. Are you sure you aren’t confusing her with Mdme Schwarzkopf- I’m sure we could get one more kick into her before the open season on her closes
or else perhaps we should just save ourselves the time and assume everyone outside this blog is homophobic unless otherwise advised. I would bring it up at a Klan meeting but I’m scared to in case someone notices some of my more obvious “frilly bits”.
– and yes- I’m with David- friends of mine who saw her recently didn’t notice “the clapped out voice” either – they still raved! Makes me think we must all be taking the same drugs!
Bit of rummaging around this internet thingy and apparently Bassey’s first husband, Kenneth Hume, was openly gay (or as open as you could be in pre-67 Britain). Stale news to you all I’m sure, but somehow it past me by. So I’m beginning to think that we shouldn’t count homophobia amongst Dame Shirl’s personality faults (of which there are one or two!).
And I meant to say I’ve seen her three times in the past ten years. I’ll go again if only for the irony of seeing a woman dripping in diamonds sing ‘I, I who have nothing’!
DAVID, I’m GLAD to be put “right” about S.B. I’m glad that SHE now knows which “side her bread is buttered on”. I’m also glad to know she can still sing. Her gay fans are her real fans for sure. Sorry that I have a good memory and a very low tolerance for homophobia especially from gay icons! (That goes for any so-called star that depends primarily on the gay community to exist)
I meant daniel
david, perhaps that is why she was a little bitter about seeing Peter kiss a MAN!
A most auspicious video debut, La Cieca. You look so Ann-Margretian (although do I detect a slight hint of Botox paralysis?). And to think you’ve jetted to Sydney and Vienna without gels, creams, or liquids just for us!
Loved the clips, especially La Gruberova. Generally I am not a big fan of hers, but she nails this one. Kick-ass singing!!
Baryton, I had exactly the same thought as you while watching Dame Gwyneth singing “The Last Rose of…Whatever…”: “And they say Sutherland was hard to understand!”
