Welcome to the sixties!
To mark the 70th birthday (and rumored retirement) of Luciano Pavarotti, "Unnatural Acts of Opera" presents a performance from the tenor's pre-superstar period. It's La boheme opposite Mirella Freni, with Thomas Schippers conducting, as broadcast on RAI (Rome) on July 17, 1969. After the acts, it's even more of the Pav, singing scenes from I lombardi, Lucia di Lammermoor, I puritani and Rigoletto, 1966 - 1972. Act 1 begins tonight on Unnatural Acts of Opera.Labels: pav

Thanks for a beautiful selection, Cieca. When you have sat through so many mediocre (or downright awful) productions of 'Boheme', hearing a good performance makes your heart ache.
If any of you heard the 'Tribute To Pav' show on Pulbic Radio this past weekend, the excerpts were fantastic. But they talked about the high F in the 'Puritani' recording, saying that it was sung heroically in full voice.
But to my ears it sounded like neither. Not that it wasn't good, but I have always thought that it sounded like a reinforced head tone such as the French tenors used to employ.
It seems churlish to mention given the exciting performance, but I have wondered if Pav couldn't have gone for a full-voice F just in the studio. Perhaps discretion was the better part of valor?
