This may be apocryphal — opera urban legend — but a friend related, during a San Francisco Opera performance of Un Ballo in Maschera in the late ’50s, the Amelia, Gertrude Grob-Prandl (large of voice AND stature) came out wearing a white gown. Seat-mate leaned toward said friend and commented “She came to the ball disguised as Mt. Shasta.”
