"Singing is difficult"

… so says soprano/mentor Renata Scotto, in a charming interview in the NY Times about her singing academy in Westchester. And, of course, there’s a lot more wisdom where that came from. Matthew Gurewitsch is the attentive interviewer. Now Playing at the D.M.V.: Renata Scotto.

Y’know it’s so refreshing to read about an artist (especially one of a certain age – and that’s a compliment!) sharing so generously of their time, talent, and (in the case of La Scotto) their long historical connections not only to the roles that the students are singing but ot the great advice from the great conductors and coaches she’s worked with.

Puts Renaaay’s beauty regimen in a whole new (read: unflattering) light, doesn’t it?

It is so gratifying to see that New York finally has recognized what a great artist Renata was. At one time she was vilified by both the press and the public. As a long time fan of hers I can tell you she never gave a dull performance. (Unlike Renee or ruth ann) Unfortunately toward the end of her singing career we in New York were cheated of any chance to see her in Rosenkavalier, Voix Humaine, Fedora or as Kundry. She deserved better in this city.she never got a proper farewell from the Met.
